The first manifestation of award-winning urban design guidelines drafted by the Battery Park City Authority, Building 22 contains an unusual coalition of occupants. Driven by a desire to stabilize the neighborhood by attracting families, a tower of bedrooms rises next to a base of classrooms. To harmonize the masses of tower and school, a variety of shapes, colors, and configurations of brick shift scales from delineating the building silhouette to marking triple-story bay structures with shadow and detail. This is most prominent at the base, where curved brick piers support an arcade, creating deep shadows that welcome students to their classrooms.
